Eight Precepts
These training precepts guide wholesome conduct in body and speech, forming a foundation for developing mindfulness, clear comprehension, and meditation as part of the Noble Eightfold Path. They also foster communal harmony, restraint, and self-discipline.
They are undertaken as a voluntary and personal commitment.
1. Harmlessness: Refrain from intentionally taking the life of any living being.
2. Trustworthiness: Refrain from taking what is not given.
3. Chastity: Refrain from all sexual activity.
4. Right Speech: Refrain from false, harsh, malicious, or frivolous speech, as well as worldly gossip.
5. Sobriety: Refrain from intoxicating drinks and drugs; smoking is prohibited at all times within the monastery.
6. Refrain from eating after midday. This frees time for meditation and supports a life of simplicity.
7. Refrain from entertainment and adornment: Avoid music, dance, games, and beautifying the body with jewelry or makeup, to help turn attention inward toward the Dhamma.
8. Refrain from high or luxurious beds and seats, and from overindulging in sleep, to cultivate wakefulness, mindfulness, and clear awareness throughout the day.
