We sincerely request you to read the following Six Principles of Mindful-Awareness & Harmony with nature.
(a) Segregate Waste分类垃圾
Five clearly labeled bins are provided. Please be mindful and aware when disposing of items.
1. Food Waste (for composting)
2. Paper and Cardboard
3. Cans and Tins
4. Plastics 塑料
5. Glass
Note: Please ensure that plastic bottles, cans, and tins are clean before placing them in the bins. Avoid repeated cleaning. Items in categories (2), (3), (4), and (5) will be sent by our volunteers to the recycling center.
Although Brahmavihara has partially implemented solar power, the demand for energy still exceeds the amount generated. Therefore, we kindly ask that you use electricity thoughtfully, particularly air conditioning.
The morning weather is good, so you can open windows for ventilation, use fans, and reduce the use of high-energy-consuming appliances.
Please remember to turn off electrical devices when not in use, and ensure all devices are switched off when you are the last to leave the room.
During retreats, there are peak hours when water consumption is particularly high. Please be mindful of minimizing water wastage. For example, avoid taking long showers when others are waiting, and ensure that taps are turned off when not in use.
To avoid any inconvenience, please gently knock three times on the door to alert those inside before entering.
While we appreciate the plants and flowers, please refrain from plucking them, allowing everyone to appreciate the beauty of nature.
If you come across any litter on the ground, kindly pick it up voluntarily. Let us work together to maintain a zero-litter environment throughout the entire compound.
Cleaning the environment regularly every day is also a part of mindful meditation practice. [Please pay attention to your respective group assignments.]
(e) Practice Noble Silence and Smiling实践高贵沉默与微笑
We maintain a Noble Silence (ariya tunhi). This practice is not merely an absence of speech, but also an intentional choice to focus on inner peace, contemplation, and the present moment.
While adhering to the silence, we offer a gentle smile which conveys warmth, compassion, and mutual respect. A mindful smile helps to foster a calm and respectful environment, allowing practitioners to remain connected with one another while adhering to the silence.
When meeting Spiritual Friend (kalyana mitta), the greeting "namo buddhāya" (which means "Homage to the Buddha") is a way to express respect.
(f) Respect Elders and Saṅgha Community
The Brahmavihara is a place for practicing and learning the Dharma. The teachings and practices of Buddhism rely on the transmission and propagation by the monks. The monastic community not only bears the responsibility of practice but also shoulders the noble mission of spreading the Dhamma and preserving the Buddhist tradition. Therefore, when seeing a monk in the monastery, a simple bow and a clasped hands gesture is enough to express respect and reverence.
By incorporating the above six principles, Brahmavihara will not only contribute to a peaceful environment but also foster the spiritual growth of both the Sangha and lay communities, ultimately guiding us toward the ultimate realization of nibbāna.
